Interlaza

Best apps for autism in 2026, by need

The best app for an autistic child depends on the need: an AAC app such as Proloquo2Go or TD Snap for communication, a picture schedule such as Choiceworks for routines, a calming app such as Breathe, Think, Do with Sesame for feelings, and a structured learning app such as Interlaza for matching and early skills. Most families use one app per need, not one app for everything.

We make Interlaza. We list other apps because they do jobs Interlaza does not do.

Communication apps

AAC apps (augmentative and alternative communication) let a child speak by tapping pictures or words. Proloquo2Go, TD Snap and Avaz AAC are full systems, often chosen together with a speech therapist. LetMeTalk is a free, simpler place to start.

Use the same AAC system at home and in therapy, so the child learns one layout.

Routine and schedule apps

Picture schedules show what comes next, which makes the day easier to predict. Choiceworks and First Then Visual Schedule HD build picture schedules and choice boards. Time Timer shows time running out as a shrinking colour. Tiimo is a visual planner that suits older children, teens and adults.

Feelings and calming apps

Breathe, Think, Do with Sesame helps children aged 2 to 5 practise calm breathing and simple steps for a hard moment. It is free and has no ads.

Early learning apps

Many early skills start with matching: seeing that this picture goes with that one. In ABA (applied behavior analysis) this is called match-to-sample. The child sees one picture at the top and picks the one that goes with it from a few choices below.

Interlaza is a web app built for this kind of learning:

  • Three kinds of exercise: the same picture, a photo to a drawing, and things that go together, like a cow and milk.
  • Help adapts to each child. A correct answer fades the help one step, and a mistake brings it back.
  • Every answer and the help used are recorded. Bayesian Knowledge Tracing (BKT), a statistical method, uses those answers to estimate how likely it is that each concept has been learned, so you see progress per learner.
  • It runs in the browser on a tablet, phone or computer, and works offline. The app is in English or Spanish. The children's activities are in English, Spanish, French, German and Swedish.
  • It is free until 30 November 2026, while it is being tested, with no card needed.
  • A guided daily session takes about 10 minutes.
  • More than 800 concepts and 2,100 images are ready to use, and you can upload your own photos, drawings or audio.
  • Five checks watch the answers every 10 trials and warn you during the session when they fall into a pattern, such as always picking the same side.
  • Session data is stored on your device first. Cloud backup is off until you turn it on, and clinical data is never sold or shared.

Interlaza is made for parents at home, instructors with a caseload, and researchers. No study has tested Interlaza itself yet, but researchers can use it to run tests, build programs and create their own experiments. It is not a communication, schedule or game app. Try an exercise or read our match-to-sample guide.

Otsimo Special Education and AutiSpark offer game-style learning on iPhone and iPad for younger children, with a paid subscription or full-access option.

How to choose

  1. Start with one need, not five apps.
  2. Ask your child's therapist or teacher what they already use, and use the same at home.
  3. Try the free version or trial first, and watch your child use it for a week.
  4. Prefer apps without ads and with calm sounds and colours.
  5. Check whether you can see progress, not only screen time.

Common questions

What is the best free app for autism? It depends on the need. LetMeTalk is a free AAC app, Breathe, Think, Do with Sesame is a free calming app, and Interlaza is free until 30 November 2026, while it is being tested, for matching and early learning.

Are there ABA apps for parents? Yes. Interlaza runs match-to-sample teaching with adaptive help and records each answer, so parents can see their child's progress.

Do autism apps replace therapy? No. They support the plan your child's therapist sets, and work best when home and therapy share the same goals.

Which autism apps work on a computer? Interlaza and Tiimo run in a web browser, and TD Snap runs on Windows. Most others are iPhone, iPad or Android apps.
