How to become an RBT: the steps, in plain language

A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is a paraprofessional certified in behavior analysis. RBTs help deliver behavior-analytic services under the direction and close supervision of a qualified supervisor. This page walks through the five steps the BACB describes, so you know what comes before the exam and what comes after it.

The BACB changed how RBT certification is maintained in 2026, and the rules that apply to you can depend on the date you certify or recertify. This page names each requirement and does not state fees, deadlines or hours: take those from the BACB, which is the only source for them.

The five steps

  1. Step 1

    Read the RBT Handbook

The BACB publishes the requirements in its RBT Handbook and updates it as the rules change. Read the current version before you start, because you must meet the requirements in place when you apply.

Open the RBT Handbook on the BACB site
  2. Step 2

    Meet the eligibility requirements

The handbook lists what you need before applying:

    • a minimum age
    • a high school diploma
    • background and abuse registry checks
    • the required training
    • an initial competency assessment

The competency assessment is separate from the exam: it is part of becoming eligible, and the handbook says who may conduct it. The training and the assessment are not something exam practice replaces.

  3. Step 3

    Apply through your BACB account

You create an account with the BACB, complete the items it asks for and submit the certification application. The BACB reviews it before you can schedule the exam.

  4. Step 4

Take and pass the RBT exam

The exam is taken through Pearson VUE, and it follows the RBT Test Content Outline. This is the step Interlaza Prep helps with: practice questions with explained answers and a timed mock exam, organized by the six areas of the outline.

After you pass, an RBT Supervisor or RBT Requirements Coordinator must add you as a supervisee before you begin providing services.

  5. Step 5

    Maintain and renew your certification

Certification is not finished at the exam. You keep receiving ongoing supervision, follow the RBT ethics code and recertify. The BACB changed how often you recertify and added professional development for certifications and recertifications after 2026, so check the handbook for the rules that apply to your date.

The two requirements people ask about most

The required RBT training

You must complete a training program that meets the requirements in the BACB curriculum outline for RBT training. The BACB does not provide the training, certificates of completion or training program recommendations.

The training may be offered by your employer, a university or an online training program. The provider may not be related to, subordinate to, or employed by you, and you upload the certificate of completion with your application. Ask your provider to confirm the course was designed to meet the current requirements.

The initial competency assessment

After you complete the required training, you must demonstrate that you can competently perform the tasks on the BACB initial competency assessment. You complete the assessment with a qualified assessor, called the Responsible Assessor in the BACB application, and upload it with your application.

The assessment is different from the exam. It shows you can perform the tasks, while the exam is a multiple-choice test of what you know. The assessor may not be related to, subordinate to, or employed by you. The handbook links to the current assessment packet.

What the RBT exam covers

The exam follows six content areas. Each one is explained task by task in the study guide, with a link to practice it.

Questions about becoming an RBT

What is an RBT?

A Registered Behavior Technician is a paraprofessional certified in behavior analysis by the BACB. RBTs assist in delivering behavior-analytic services under the direction and close supervision of an RBT Supervisor and/or RBT Requirements Coordinator, who is responsible for their work.

Do I need a job before I apply?

The BACB explains that RBT certification was designed for settings where a BCBA or BCaBA is already providing services, so applying most often happens after you are employed by an organization where you will assist them. Check the handbook for how supervision must be arranged.

What is the RBT initial competency assessment?

It is how you show the BACB that you can competently perform the tasks it lists. You complete it with a qualified assessor after finishing the required training and upload it with your application. It is separate from the exam, and the handbook links to the current assessment packet.

Who provides the RBT training?

Not the BACB. The training may be offered by your employer, a university or an online training program, and it must meet the requirements in the BACB curriculum outline. The provider may not be related to, subordinate to, or employed by you.

Is the exam the only requirement?

No. Before the exam you must meet the eligibility requirements, including the training and the initial competency assessment. After the exam you must keep your certification current through supervision, ethics and recertification.

Where do I find current fees, deadlines and renewal rules?

In the BACB RBT Handbook and on the BACB RBT page. They are not repeated here because they change, and the rules that apply can depend on your date of certification or recertification.

Does Interlaza replace the required training?

No. Interlaza Prep is independent exam practice. It does not provide the required training or the competency assessment, and practice results do not predict or guarantee passing.
